Obama affirmed his desire to open an embassy in Cuba before April.

On March 3, Reuters reported that in a private interview with the news agency the previous day, US President Barack Obama officially confirmed his desire to reopen the embassy in Cuba before the Organization of American States (OAS) summit in mid-April in Panama.

Obama said that part of the work toward this goal had been done, but stressed that the process of normalizing relations between Washington and Havana would be long and that the two sides would discuss many broader issues.

The US President also frankly acknowledged that "we (the US) must open up relations with Cuba in a way that, ultimately, can bring about more change in Cuba."

Although regional media had previously mentioned this milestone and the second round of negotiations between the two sides, which just took place in Washington, focused only on reopening embassies in each country, neither side publicly announced any specific milestone. This is the first time the US President has acknowledged this desire.
