On June 26, U.S. President Barack Obama announced the reappointment of General Martin Dempsey, 61, as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest-ranking military officer in the U.S. military.

In a statement, President Obama also announced that Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Sandy Winnefeld, would be reappointed for another two-year term. Obama also urged the Senate to quickly confirm both nominations.

The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, along with the Secretary of Defense, are the top military advisors to President Obama.
