The guava tree, scientifically known as Psidium guyjava L., belongs to the Myrtaceae family. In Vietnam, there are also smaller guava varieties such as ornamental guava and small guava. All parts of the guava tree are used in medicine, from the fruit to the young buds and leaves.

Studies atBrazilStudies in Thailand show that guava leaves can treat intestinal diseases and diarrhea. Regarding its effects on intestinal diseases, the quercetin-type flavonoids in guava leaves have activity on the secretion of acetylcholine in the intestines, stimulating intestinal smooth muscle to reduce abdominal pain caused by intestinal smooth muscle spasms.

Furthermore, guava leaves also affect water reabsorption in the intestines. The lectins in guava leaves can bind to E. coli (bacteria that commonly cause diarrhea), preventing the bacteria from being absorbed into the inner wall of the intestine and thus preventing intestinal infections...

Furthermore, guava leaf extract has beneficial effects on the cardiovascular system; studies have noted that guava leaf extract possesses many activities on the cardiovascular system and is effective in treating cases of cardiac arrhythmia.
