An Uzbek athlete was disqualified from competitions yesterday after testing positive for a banned substance. Ten athletes competing in the 2012 Olympics have now tested positive for doping. However, all were detected before the competition and disqualified. Luiza Galiulina, the Uzbek rhythmic gymnastics champion, was the first case of doping during the Olympic Games and was deported back to her country.

Since last Saturday, Galiulina has been suspended from competition pending the results of her B sample test after her A sample, taken on July 25th, showed traces of furosemide, a diuretic.

In sports medicine, furosemide and several other diuretics are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) because they are believed to help conceal athletes' use of other doping substances.

Galiulina's B sample was tested on Sunday and again came back positive for furosemide. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided yesterday to disqualify the 20-year-old athlete from Tashkent from competitions and send her back to Uzbekistan.

"We will forward this athlete's file to the International Gymnastics Federation, and that organization will consider further severe sanctions within its jurisdiction," Reuters quoted the IOC statement as saying.

Galiulina was one of nine athletes disqualified from the 2012 Olympics yesterday. The other eight were badminton players from China, South Korea, and Indonesia, due to uncooperative attitudes and intentionally losing doubles matches in an attempt to create favorable results in their quarterfinal matches.
