Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe wants to personally sign a Russia-Japan peace treaty with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he announced this on February 1 at the Budget Committee of the Japanese House of Representatives.

"I don't want to pass the baton to anyone, I want to sign a peace treaty with President Putin," Mr. Abe said.
In December 2016, Mr. Abe held talks with President Putin in Yamaguchi prefecture in Tokyo, Japan, reaching an agreement on large-scale economic cooperation between the two countries, aiming to create a favorable atmosphere for signing a peace treaty.
Mr. Abe plans to visit Russia early this year to discuss signing a peace treaty between the two countries.
