Mr. Ban Ki-moon left open the possibility of running for President of South Korea. |
Mr. Ban made the announcement as protests against President Park Geun Hye entered their eighth week.
In his final press conference as the top leader of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon said he will take some time off after his term ends at the end of December, then return to South Korea to "consider a job that can best help the country."
The South Korean presidential election is scheduled to take place in December 2017.
However, this election could also be held earlier if suspended President Park Geun-hye, the figure at the center of the political scandal in this country, is officially removed from office.
On December 9, the South Korean National Assembly passed a motion to impeach President Park Geun-hye, which immediately suspended her from her presidential position.
After 180 days, if the Constitutional Court issues a final verdict determining that Ms. Park Geun-hye is guilty, she will become the first incumbent president of South Korea to be removed from office and a presidential election can be held within 60 days thereafter./.
