Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung lost everything because he fell into individualism.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung followed in the footsteps of a number of corrupt Central officials who fell into individualism, leading to personal failure and disgrace.
Last weekend, the Ministry of Public Security's Investigation Police Agency completed its investigation and proposed to prosecute Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung - former Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee for "Abusing position and power while performing official duties" in the case of purchasing Redoxy 3C chemicals to treat pollution in lakes in Hanoi. Previously, Mr. Chung was sentenced to 5 years in prison for "Appropriating State secret documents" and was prosecuted on suspicion of illegally interfering in bidding activities related to Nhat Cuong Company at the Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment.

The investigation's conclusion has exposed the dark corners that the public has long wondered about, clarifying the wrongdoings of the former leader of a city of more than 8 million people. The clearer the truth, the more we see the leader's recklessness, disregard for the law, disregard for principles in leadership and direction. Power is exploited and abused for personal purposes. Front- and back-door businesses, businesses of relatives and family members have become the target to influence the leader's decisions. The interests of the people and the interests of the majority are placed in secondary positions. Using power to get money, then using money to polish one's reputation.
The violations that the investigation agency concluded about Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung cannot be defined more precisely in four words that the Party leader, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, has mentioned many times. That is "individualism". Individualism has eroded personality, causing people to fall once and then continue to "get dirty" the next time. One violation follows another, and in the end, it all boils down to two words: "power" and "money".
But “What’s the use of having a lot of money? You can’t take it with you when you die. Honor is the most sacred and noble thing!” More than once, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had to mention money and honor for officials, especially leaders. In the case of Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung, it becomes even more poignant and bitter.
Having been a doctor of law, a criminal officer, awarded the title of Hero of the Armed Forces at the age of 37, promoted to general at the age of 46, and then successively held leadership positions in the unit protecting order and safety for the capital, Mr. Chung is expected to be a decisive, proactive leader, daring to think, daring to do... But the phenomenon sometimes does not fully reflect the nature, just as the General Secretary said: Don't see "red" and think it is "ripe".
Before the 13th Party Congress, the personnel issue was hotly discussed in all sectors and at all levels. Especially at the Central level, the two words "talent" and "virtue" were used as a measure to select cadres. Both sides are respected, but perhaps the reality of the recent fight against negativity, corruption and degradation shows that "virtue" must be the root, without morality, no matter how talented one is, one cannot lead the people. President Ho Chi Minh and his students left a good name for life precisely because they promoted the words "virtue" and "integrity".
Not being greedy, not being blinded by money, not using any means to achieve position; promoting honor, promoting moral qualities, promoting integrity, putting national interests above personal interests, then perhaps, there would be fewer leaders disciplined and criminally prosecuted.
Once the leader of the "Heroic Capital" - the national political and administrative center, if Mr. Chung had been aware of his responsibility, together with the Party Committee and the city government, he would have focused on leadership and direction to make correct decisions that were in line with the people's wishes instead of intervening in specific projects with the influence of relatives and acquaintances, then the city's history today would not have been tarnished like that.
“What’s the point of having a lot of money? You can’t take it with you when you die.” General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong once said this in a closed conference, with a sentimental and sharing tone. But now, it has officially been included in his speech at the first meeting of the new Government term, showing how concerned he is about the honor of cadres and party members, especially those in leadership positions.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Chung has followed in the footsteps of a number of corrupted Central officials who fell into individualism, leading to their downfall. "If an official plots to seize everything, and does everything by any means, how can the world not be short-lived and the country not be lost?" - the head of the Party, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has reminded many times.
