Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a telegram to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres with condolences over the death of Mr. Kofi Annan.

The Russian Head of State acknowledged Mr. Kofi Annan's personal contributions to the implementation of the United Nations' tasks and the expansion of the world organization's peacekeeping potential.

"Many years of the life of this great man and politician of great stature were devoted to serving the mission of the United Nations. Leading the United Nations in a difficult period, Mr. Annan did a lot to implement the goals and tasks of the organization, strengthen the central role of the United Nations in world affairs. Particularly significant was his personal contribution to expanding the peacekeeping potential of the United Nations, as well as in the process of overcoming a number of regional conflicts," the Kremlin press service quoted President Putin as saying.

President Putin also commented that Mr. Annan's achievements have been duly appreciated by the international community, as evidenced by the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded.

"I was fortunate to have the opportunity to communicate privately with Mr. Kofi Annan. I sincerely admire his wisdom and courage, the ability to make wise decisions even in the most complex and dangerous situations. Kofi Annan will forever be remembered in the hearts of Russians," President Putin emphasized.
