According to the results of the vote in the House of Representatives today, Mr. Abe, 63 years old, won 312/465 votes in favor, while the leader of the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party only won 54 votes. In the Upper House, Mr. Abe received 151/242 votes in favor. Thus, Mr. Abe continues to become the 98th Prime Minister of Japan.

Previously, in the October 24 Lower House election, the ruling LDP won 284 out of 465 seats. Together with the New Komeito Party, the LDP's partner, the ruling coalition holds 313 seats, winning a solid two-thirds majority in the Lower House.

Immediately after that, Mr. Abe will form a new Cabinet and submit it to the Emperor for approval.

This victory is an important premise for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's administration to gather enough power and strength for its economic, defense and foreign affairs agenda in the next four years.

According to observers, in this new term, economic policy will continue to be the top priority of the Japanese Prime Minister, especially the “Abenomics” policy which has brought many positive results in promoting the Japanese economy. Japanese businesses responded very positively to the voting results.

The President of the Japan Business Federation, Mr. Sadayuki Sakakibara, said that this result helps the Government's policies to be implemented smoothly. He also emphasized that the regional security environment is increasingly tense and Prime Minister Abe needs to demonstrate leadership in all domestic and international issues.

In addition, this victory also created a step forward for the LDP and Prime Minister Abe to accelerate the process of amending the Constitution. However, some analysts also expressed concern that Prime Minister Abe's tough stance, especially the effort to amend Article 9 of the Constitution, will affect the relationship between Japan and its two neighboring countries, China and South Korea.

In addition, Mr. Abe also pledged to increase the consumption tax from 8 to 10% from October 2019 to strengthen social welfare and allow nuclear power plants that meet safety standards to resume operation.

According to assessments, Mr. Abe’s victory will be “beneficial” for the US. In the near future, President Donald Trump will visit Japan – a strong partner of the US in Asia.
