"Montesquieu once said 'there is no more cruel tyranny than that which exists under the shield of law and in the name of justice'," former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra wrote on his personal Twitter today, referring to 18th-century French philosopher Charles de Montesquieu, Reuters reported.
This is the first post by former Prime Minister Thaksin on Twitter since August 2015. He was ousted in a 2006 coup and has lived in exile since 2008 to avoid a prison sentence for corruption in Thailand, a sentence he claims was politically motivated.
The article was published after former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin’s sister, fled ahead of Thailand’s Supreme Court sentencing her on charges of mismanaging a rice subsidy program that cost the government money. If convicted, Yingluck, 50, could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Ms. Yingluck is believed to have traveled to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), where Mr. Thaksin has a house. Thai army chief Chalermchai Sitthisat said Ms. Yingluck's escape plan was carefully planned in advance and may have had help from Mr. Thaksin.
