According to Japan's Ministry of Defense, in a move to expand the Japan-US alliance, this is the first time a US President has boarded a ship of the Japan Self-Defense Forces.

Japan plans to convert the Kaga destroyer into an aircraft carrier capable of deploying fighter jets to counter China's rise and Beijing's increasing expansionism in the Indo-Pacific region.

Meanwhile, according to an announcement from the White House, after inspecting the ship, President Trump will give a speech to soldiers during a visit to the Navy amphibious assault ship stationed at the US naval base in Yokosuka, near the MSDF base.

A senior US administration official said the White House boss will affirm the strength of the bilateral alliance, its importance in deterring aggression in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as note the regional and global nature of the Japan-US partnership.

This afternoon, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will leave Japan for home./.
