According to the Japanese Ministry of Defense, in a move to expand the Japan-US alliance, this is the first time a US President has boarded a ship of the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
Japan plans to convert the Kaga destroyer into an aircraft carrier capable of deploying fighter jets to counter the rise of China and Beijing's increasing expansionism in the Indo-Pacific region.
Meanwhile, according to an announcement from the White House, after inspecting the ship, President Trump will give a speech to soldiers during a visit to the Navy amphibious assault ship stationed at the US naval base in Yokosuka, near the MSDF base.
A senior US administration official said the White House chief will affirm the strength of the bilateral alliance, its importance in deterring aggression in the Indo-Pacific region, as well as note the regional and global nature of the Japan-US partnership.
This afternoon, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will leave Japan to return home./.
