After two phone calls, the two leaders of the US and the Philippines met face to face for the first time. Philippine President Duterte had his first meeting with his US counterpart Trump on November 11, within the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit week taking place in Vietnam.
According to the Philippine Presidential Palace, Mr. Trump told Mr. Duterte: “See you tomorrow.” The US President will travel to Manila to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
The meeting between the two leaders is highly anticipated, due to their somewhat straightforward personalities and leadership styles.
Mr Trump, like Mr Duterte, has been known to respond verbally to criticism of him. Both men have unconventional leadership styles that are seen as a challenge to elite politics.
But they also have fundamental differences. While the US President has no experience in public office, his Philippine counterpart has been a mayor for more than two decades and served a term as a member of Congress.
While Mr. Trump has an immigration policy that bans citizens from Muslim-majority countries, Mr. Duterte loves Muslim culture and considers the Muslim community as his own. President Trump is not popular with the people, while President Duterte continues to receive support from the majority of Filipinos./.
