Chairman of the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance Vo Kim Cu lost his status as a delegate of the 14th National Assembly from May 15.

This afternoon, the majority of members of the National Assembly Standing Committee agreed to dismiss Mr. Vo Kim Cu from his duties as a delegate of the 14th National Assembly.(Chairman of Vietnam Cooperative Alliance, member of Economic Committee, member of National Assembly delegation of Ha Tinh province).

The National Assembly Standing Committee's agreement with Mr. Vo Kim Cu's application to resign from his duties as a National Assembly deputy will be reported to the National Assembly at the session taking place next week.

Previously, on April 21, the Secretariat announced the conclusion of disciplining the Party Committee of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and a number of officials who had committed serious violations in the Formosa case of environmental destruction in four central provinces. Based on the level of violations, the Secretariat decided to remove Mr. Vo Kim Cu from the position of Standing Committee member of the Provincial Party Committee for the 2005-2010 and 2010-2015 terms, including the positions of Secretary of the Party Committee of the Provincial People's Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, and Secretary of the Ha Tinh Provincial Party Committee.

The Secretariat's conclusion stated that Mr. Vo Kim Cu directly signed many documents that were not in accordance with regulations in granting investment certificates; assigning and leasing sea surface; agreeing in principle to allow Formosa Company to self-clear the land to build a wastewater discharge pipeline that was not in accordance with regulations...; lacking responsibility in directing and supervising the project implementation process.

At the time of the environmental incident in 4 central provinces, in April 2016, Mr. Vo Kim Cu was introduced by the Vietnam Fatherland Front to run for election as a representative of the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance.In the election on May 22, 2016, Mr. Cu was elected by voters of Hong Linh town, Vu Quang district, Huong Son district and Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh province as a delegate of the 14th National Assembly with 75% of valid votes.

According to the Law on Organization of the National Assembly, a National Assembly deputy may request to resign from his or her duties for health reasons or other reasons. The National Assembly shall decide whether to accept the resignation of a National Assembly deputy. If the National Assembly is not in session, the decision shall be made by the National Assembly Standing Committee, which shall then report to the National Assembly at its next session.

The total number of elected deputies to the 14th National Assembly is 496. However, after a meeting to consider and vote on the qualifications of deputies, the National Election Council voted by secret ballot not to recognize the qualifications of Mr. Trinh Xuan Thanh (former Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hau Giang province) due to signs of violations and Ms. Nguyen Thi Nguyet Huong due to not meeting the standards and the individual's request to withdraw. Thus, with the dismissal of Mr. Vo Kim Cu from the National Assembly, the total number of deputies to the 14th National Assembly is now 493.
