'Moonlight' is 'Best Picture', 'La La Land' leads with six 2017 Oscars

The 89th Academy Awards ended on the evening of February 26 in Los Angeles, USA (local time) after an incident that left viewers around the planet bewildered. The work Moonlight won the award for "Best Picture" instead of the hit musical La La Land as initially announced. In addition to this award, Moonlight also won two categories including "Best Adapted Screenplay" and "Best Supporting Actor" for black actor Mahershala Ali.

Moonlight was directed by Barry Jenkins and adapted from the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue. This is the second feature film by the 1979-born filmmaker and the first LGBT film to win an Oscar.

The story tells the story of a young gay man's repressed coming of age, using moonlight as a symbolic image of gender and skin color beauty. Surpassing La La Land, Moonlight's victory is considered a celebration of the humanistic spirit that is a tradition of the American Academy. Last year, the psychological film Spotlight, which was not as popular as The Revenant, also won an Oscar when it told the story of a group of journalists fighting to expose the shocking child molestation crimes in the United States.

Meanwhile, La La Land won the most Oscars this year with six. The musical was honored in the categories of "Best Director" (Damien Chazelle), "Best Actress" (Emma Stone),"Best Original Song" (City of Stars), "Best Original Score", "Best Cinematography" and "Production Design".

Manchester by The Sea won two convincing awards."Best Original Screenplay"for screenwriter Kenneth Lonerganand"Best Actor" for Casey Affleck. In the psychological drama, Ben Affleck's younger brother plays a man facing a tragic past. His performance has been highly praised by critics since the film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September 2016.The role in Manchester by the Sea brought Casey Affleck into the public and critical spotlight a decade after he received an Oscar nomination for his role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford in 2007.

The "Special Effects" and "Original Song" categories were also considered worthy for the blockbuster The Jungle Book and the song "City of Stars" from La La Land. While The Jungle Book immerses viewers in the space of animals and jungles entirely with special effects, City of Stars creates a romantic space in the most emotional scene of the musical.

In the foreign language film category, The Salesman brought director Asghar Farhadi his second Oscar, after A Separation in 2012. The film beat out another potential nominee, Toni Erdmann, to be honored by the American Academy. The work is a slice of contemporary Iranian society.

This year’s Oscars were televised live in 226 countries, but they didn’t really create much excitement. Aside from musical performances and a red carpet with many colorful costumes, the awards show didn’t have many interspersed performances to attract viewers. The candy and balloon drops from the sky and the invitations to meet A-list celebrities were not impressive. At the end of the program, the American Academy lost points in the eyes of the audience because of the wrong award announcement.
