In the first week of April, more than 500 imported cars from Thailand arrived at Hai Phong port. This is the market that has exported the most cars to Vietnam since the beginning of the year.

After the bottleneck of the Vehicle Type Approval Certificate (VTA) was removed, cars from Thailand continuously poured into Vietnam in recent weeks. According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, in the week from March 29 to April 5, cThe country imported 651 cars of all kinds, of which 602 were cars with less than 9 seats, worth 16 million USD. On average, each car costs about 26,000 USD.

The number of imported cars into Vietnam began to increase in 2018, but was still much lower than the same period in 2017.(Unit: vehicle)

Also according to the published data table, most of the imported cars with less than 9 seats originated from Thailand, accounting for 523 cars, 52 cars from Mexico, 23 cars from Germany and the remaining 4 cars were divided equally between Japan and the US.

After Honda cleared customs for about 2,000 cars from Thailand in early March, the number of imported cars into Vietnam increased sharply compared to the first two months of this year. Vietnam imported 3,679 completely built-up cars in March, of which 3,077 were cars with less than 9 seats (accounting for nearly 84%), trucks accounted for 522, cars with more than 9 seats accounted for 21 and 59 other types of cars.

From the beginning of the year to the end of March 31, the number of cars imported into Vietnam reached 4,217 vehicles, much lower than the 26,366 vehicles in the same period last year. The reason for this decrease is that businesses cannot import cars due to the regulations in Decree 116 on import business.on automobile assembly, production and import business issued in October 2017, effective from January 2018.

The complicated provisions in Decree 116 have been met by many businesses. The most difficult issue, the issue of VTA papers, has been partly resolved when the Ministry of Transport accepted papers issued by the governments of Thailand, Indonesia, the US, Germany, etc.

It may take some time for the import volume to increase steadily, as Indonesia exports cars to Vietnam. In 2017, Thailand and Indonesia were the two countries that exported the most cars to the Vietnamese market.
