Pacquiao sets date to defend WBO title

April 12, 2017 16:47

The Filipino welterweight boxer will compete in Australia for the first time, when he decides to fight Jeff Horn on July 1.

This was a carefully calculated decision by Pacquiao, even though Horn is Australian and will certainly receive more cheers when the match takes place at Suncorp Stadium on July 1.

The Filipino’s opponent in the WBO welterweight title defense has a formidable record. Horn competed in the 2012 Olympics and remains undefeated in his professional career, with 16 wins and one draw in 17 fights.

Mayweather wants to choose a younger, stronger opponent for his next fight and chooses Horn.

Pacquiao lost his WBO title to Floyd Mayweather two years ago in the "Boxing of the Century". He announced his retirement in April 2016 but returned to the sport, defeating Jessie Vargas in November to regain the WBO title. "Pac Man" is still in good form and is considered the favorite to defend his title against Horn.

Pacquiao's most anticipated fight this year is against Amir Khan. In February, the two announced they were negotiating a fight, which is expected to take place later this year.

Pacquiao and Khan have never faced each other. Khan hinted at a fight with his senior a few years ago. The 30-year-old Briton is eight years younger than Pacquiao.
