Pakistan: Earthquake shakes several major cities

The earthquake also caused aftershocks in the Indian capital New Delhi.

In Islamabad, people fled their homes and offices in fear that buildings would be damaged. Television footage showed many people running out and praying in public places.

Kiran Saeed, a witness in Rawalpindi, a city near Islamabad, told the AP that she was studying at home when she felt her chair shaking and initially thought someone had pushed it. "When I came back, there was no one there and then the walls started shaking. We ran out of the house and everyone recited the Quran together to pray."

Sahiba Bibi, a resident of the capital Islamabad, said she almost fell to the ground when the ground started shaking. "I am still very scared," she said.

Ahmad Kamal, spokesman for Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority, said they had not received any reports of damage from the quake-hit areas. However, he said landslides after the quake were a potential threat, and said he had asked local authorities to prepare for the worst.

The earthquake that occurred on April 10 local time was one of the strongest earthquakes since October 2015 in Pakistan, when a 7.5-magnitude earthquake caused severe damage to thousands of houses in the northwest.
