Palestinians took to the streets to protest on the day the US opened its embassy in Jerusalem. |
According to the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, it is the duty of the sending State to be within the territory of the receiving State. Therefore, the Palestinian position clearly states that "the relocation of the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is a violation of the Vienna Convention"
With this view, Palestine asked the International Court of Justice to clearly see the US's violations and make a decision forcing the US to recall its diplomatic ambassador from Jerusalem to comply with international obligations under the Vienna Convention.
In addition, Palestine also asked the Court to issue provisions to limit US activities in the Middle East due to violations of the Convention, and to ensure that the US does not repeat "illegal acts".
Jerusalem, originally an "inviolable" holy land, has been the root of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict for many years. Palestine wants to make East Jerusalem its capital, while Israel claims Jerusalem is its "single, indivisible" capital.
The opening of the US Embassy in Jerusalem has increased tensions in the Middle East. Jerusalem has become the biggest political obstacle to negotiations. What is happening now makes the possibility of reaching an agreement on Jerusalem almost impossible while violence will continue in the region in the future.
