(Baonghean) - The tea shop was as crowded and noisy as ever, filled with chatter and discussions. But today's atmosphere was tinged with academicism, heavily reliant on literature and writing. This was because the "drinkers" were debating a topic that, while not sensational, was somewhat unusual and was attracting widespread societal attention: doctors must study and take literature exams. This means they must possess the ability to write poetry and prose, not just knives, scissors, and syringes.

Learning is beneficial; whatever you learn is good for you. That's what the street vendor said. At least the sentences and words aren't so clumsy that readers are "at risk of having a brain hemorrhage," as the Minister of Health said. Having a bit of "literary flair" in one's character surely makes them more refined and gentle in their behavior, and more humane and responsible towards human life when treating patients... The reason for saying this is that, traditionally, in our country, there's a prevailing view that "literature is anthropology." And "human" refers to a person, and that's accompanied by a series of concepts related to humanity and human nature, such as kindness, compassion, humanity, humanism, and righteousness... Those who study literature have the opportunity to understand and empathize with people better. Perhaps, thanks to that, they don't need to slip a bribe beforehand to avoid pain during injections, for example. Thus, studying literature will increase humanity. But that's only when people have access to decent literature. If it's the kind of literature currently prevalent online, full of cheesy, shocking, and sexual language and imagery, and violence, it only serves to increase animalistic tendencies. And clearly, society is paying the price for such cheap, harmful things. Even more worrying is that this kind of trashy literature is everywhere. Just open the internet, you'll find it in tabloid newspapers. It's the same every day. And it's very popular with young people. Besides, thinking that studying literature will make you a better person is also one-sided. Because it's impossible for someone who studies literature to be kinder than someone who studies mathematics. Humanity has tried many things, but no one has ever come to such a conclusion.

To reach a consensus, studying Literature is good, but it is absolutely not the deciding factor in defining humanity with concepts like kindness, compassion, humanity, humanism, and righteousness... as listed above. Rather, compassion in each person is built and nurtured from a young age through the education and upbringing within each family, then through school, books, and society. It also comes from the example set by those who came before and those with prestige and responsibility in society... In other words, as the woman selling drinks concluded, building compassion requires a comprehensive approach with many simultaneous and continuous solutions. It's not simply a matter of making people study more Literature or take more Literature exams.
