According to Defense Update, Israeli artillery forces have just used EXTRA rocket artillery to attack targets at Syria's Damascus airport.
The attack took place at 3:00 a.m. on December 7, with fires breaking out at the Al Mezzeh military airport in western Syria. Responding to the attack, the Syrian government said the missile was launched from a location west of Tel Avital, in the Golan Heights, about 56 kilometers from the target. |
If the Syrian statement is true, this is the first time Israel has used the latest generation EXTRA rocket artillery to attack Syria. And the distance of more than 50 km to the target is only one-third of the maximum range achieved by EXTRA. |
EXTRA was developed by the defense company Israel Military Industries (IMI) and has been exported to several unnamed foreign countries, even though the Israeli Army has yet to field the weapon system. |
According to Israeli press, IMI has conducted five consecutive test firings with the new EXTRA missile in the south of the country, with the missiles placed in a launcher on a truck and it has demonstrated excellent combat capabilities by destroying dozens of targets kilometers away. |
The EXTRA missile has a body diameter of 300mm and a length of more than 4m. The missile carries a special 120kg warhead, is designed to attack ground targets and is guided by a GPS navigation system. |
EXTRA has a range of about 150 km, a missile weight of 150 kg, and a circular error of probability (CEP) of about 10 m. Meanwhile, the standard US 155 mm artillery shell is said to have a CEP of 200-300 m at a much more modest range. |
EXTRA is capable of being launched from a variety of carriers, assembled into launcher clusters of 2 to 16 missiles for ground launch. |
The launcher can be mounted on a high mobility truck or at a fixed site. The EXTRA ammunition is stored in a sealed container, so it has a long service life and very low maintenance costs. |
According to a report recently published by SIPRI, Vietnam has purchased a total of 20 EXTRA rocket artillery systems to equip its Navy's coastal defense force. |
