The ministers who resigned all belonged to the Democratic Movement (MoDem) party, which is allied with President Emmanuel Macron's Republic on the Move party. Most of the ministers said they resigned to prove their innocence and were willing to cooperate with the investigations.
The French Prime Minister has appointed replacements including: Ms. Nicole Belloubet, a left-wing judiciary expert, as Minister of Justice; Ms. Florence Parly, who worked in the Socialist Party government, as Minister of Defense; Ms. Annick Girardin as Minister in charge of overseas affairs; and diplomat Nathalie Loiseau as Minister in charge of European affairs.
According to observers, the newly appointed faces are not very famous in French politics. However, French President Macron affirmed that the characters selected for the cabinet must ensure strict ethical criteria. During the election campaign, Mr. Macron also repeatedly pledged to clean up French politics to restore voters' trust.
