Within just 48 hours, four ministers in the French government announced their resignations, forcing Prime Minister Edouard Philippe to quickly appoint replacements.

The ministers who resigned all belonged to the Democratic Movement (MoDem) party, which is allied with President Emmanuel Macron's La République En Marche. Most of the ministers said they resigned to prove their innocence and were willing to cooperate with the investigations.

The French prime minister has appointed replacements including: Nicole Belloubet, a left-wing judiciary expert, as justice minister; Florence Parly, who worked in the Socialist government, as defense minister; Annick Girardin as overseas affairs minister and diplomat Nathalie Loiseau as European affairs minister.

According to observers, the newly appointed faces are not very well known in French politics. However, French President Macron affirmed that the people chosen for the cabinet must meet strict ethical criteria. During the election campaign, Mr. Macron also repeatedly pledged to clean up French politics to restore voters' trust.
