Earlier, armed police had to spread out around the camp and take control of the entire squalid area during a restless night. Small groups of refugees set fire to toilets and threw rocks at security forces to resist the government's plan to dismantle the camp.
Managers say they had to dismantle the camp - home to about 6,500 migrants fleeing war and poverty - for humanitarian reasons.
They are also planning to move these people to 450 other centres across France.
“I hope this job will be finished. I am alone and I have to go to school,” said Amadou Diallo from Guinea, a West African country. “It doesn’t matter where I end up, I don’t care.”
Many of the migrants come from countries such as Afghanistan, Syria and Eritrea… and are looking to come to the UK for a better life.
Under the plan, migrants will be separated into groups such as families, adults, unaccompanied minors and vulnerable individuals including the elderly and single women.
They will then be taken to new reception centres, where they will undergo medical examinations, which will determine whether they are eligible for asylum.
Officials hope 60 buses carrying refugees will leave the camp today. The French government expects the evacuation of migrants from Calais to take at least a week.
