Breakthrough Listen, the largest project of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI), has released preliminary results after two years of searching for radio signals from outer space. SETI researchers are examining 11 signals that could potentially come from aliens, Sputnik News reported.
According to researcher Andrew Siemion at the SETI Center at the University of California, Berkeley, the research data is available to the whole world because scientists on the project have submitted data and papers to top astronomical journals for publication.
"We haven't found any suspicious traces of extraterrestrial intelligence, but we're just starting to research. What we're doing as part of the Breakthrough Listen project is to conduct more in-depth and systematic research," Siemion said.
Two years ago, Russian billionaire Yuri Milner and cosmologist Stephen Hawking invested $100 million in a decade-long search for extraterrestrials called Breakthrough Listen. "This is the largest SETI project since the Phoenix project in 1995," the team said.
In October and November last year, the project entered its implementation phase. Breakthrough Listen scientists and engineers installed the instruments they developed to search for life on the American GBT telescope and received support from the science team operating the world's largest radio telescope, FAST, in China.
Siemion and his colleagues published preliminary results from a study of 692 nearby stars on the project’s website. According to them, there were 11 signals that could indicate the existence of aliens, picked up by the telescope in different radio frequency bands.
