A new twist in the investigation into the deadly air crash seven years ago involving the plane carrying then Polish President Lech Kaczynski has just been announced.

According to Sputnik, Polish authorities have detected an “explosion” on the flight data recorder. The Polish presidential plane crashed near the Russian city of Smolensk in 2010.

Polish Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz told reporters on October 14: "We already knew that an explosion occurred and destroyed the plane. Now we know much more... We have found the time of the explosion in the data of one of the black boxes."

In April 2017, a second Polish commission tasked with investigating the crash released new findings, including that an explosion had occurred before the plane landed. The Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) rejected this conclusion, saying that the technical board had found no traces of explosives.

In the incident seven years ago, President Kaczynski's plane tried to land at an airport near Smolensk in thick fog. None of the 96 passengers, including eight crew members and a number of high-ranking Polish officials, survived.

In 2011, the IAC issued a final report on the technical investigation into the accident. It stated that the direct cause of the accident was the crew’s decision not to divert the plane to another airport. The IAC report also highlighted serious errors by the crew in training and assessing how ready the flight was for takeoff.

Poland's first commission of inquiry, set up under the leadership of then-Interior Minister Jerzy Miller, came to a similar conclusion. It concluded that the disaster occurred because the plane was flying below the permitted altitude when it began landing in dense fog.

However, the current Polish government disagrees with the IAC report and the conclusions of the commission headed by Mr. Miller, so it decided to set up a second investigation commission.
