A team of Guatemalan archaeologists has just discovered a relief on the facade of an ancient tower built 1,400 years ago in Petén province, about 600km north of Guatemala City.

According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Mexico, Guatemalan archaeologist Francisco Estrada-Belli said the bas-relief is 8 meters long and 2 meters high, and was mounted on the facade of an ancient tower. The newly discovered bas-relief depicts three figures deified according to Mayan civilization.

According to experts, this is an unprecedented work of art and architecture from a civilization that existed for centuries across a vast region encompassing the territories of five southern Mexican states and present-day Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.

Mr. Belli believes that this relief illustrates the importance of the tower and the remains of many figures previously found at the archaeological site in the aforementioned Petén province.

The Maya civilization is a unique ancient civilization alongside the Andes civilization in South America. This civilization was built and developed by the Maya people, an indigenous American tribe dating back 2,000 years.

Therefore, the Mayan civilization reached a high level not only in state-building but also flourished in the fields of architecture, mathematics, and astronomy.

Today, tourists can admire the Mayan heritage still evident in the ancient tower structures in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
