Fish fossils were discovered in South America.

This is a fossil of a fish species scientifically known as "Redfieldiiformes", which lived on the supercontinent Gondwana - a giant ancient continent made up of the lands that are now South America, Antarctica, Madagascar and India.

Paleontologist Soledad Gouiric Cavalli of CONICET said this was a surprising discovery of a new species of fish, a fossil never recorded in the history books in South America before.

The fossil is only the size of a palm and is in such good condition that scientists can clearly see the fish scales covering its exterior. After the Triassic - the geological period that marked the greatest extinction of species - the "Redfieldiiformes" fish lived in small lakes with warm and dry climates located in Mendoza province.

Expert Cavalli also expressed concern about the preservation of the above fossil specimen, and said that there are few documents and information mentioning the Triassic Period in the South American country.
