The dinosaur was named Zhenyuanlong (meaning Zhenyuan Dragon), after the fossil handler at a museum in Liaoning Province.
The fossil dates back 125 million years. The reason this 2-meter-long creature was preserved almost perfectly within the limestone is thanks to a volcanic eruption.
Scientists believe that Zhenyuanlong was an ancestor of Velociraptor. Velociraptors had wings, but their short wings only helped them maintain balance and did not allow them to fly. Velociraptors used their extremely sharp claws to firmly grip their prey.
