The Anti-Smuggling and Prohibited Goods Trading Team - Department PC46 of Hanoi City Police has just discovered and seized 160 cartons of smuggled cigarettes with an estimated value of about 2.3 billion VND.

Previously, at around 7:30 p.m. on May 21, the Anti-smuggling and Prohibited Goods Trading Team - Department PC46 of Hanoi City Police deployed to fight and discover a case of transporting and trading in prohibited goods, which were smuggled foreign cigarettes.

The police agency arrested Dang Huu Do (41 years old, in Ga street, Thuong Tin town, Hanoi), Tran Trong Truong (44 years old, in Nhan Hien village, Hien Giang commune, Thuong Tin, Hanoi) and Nguyen Huu Tin (51 years old, in Binh Vong village, Van Binh commune, Thuong Tin, Hanoi) who were driving the car with license plate 29A 728.73.

When discovered, Truong and Tin were transporting cigarettes in a car with 22 cartons measuring 24x40x60cm. Inside the cartons were foreign-made 555 Gold brand cigarettes, without invoices or documents proving legal import origin.

Quickly investigating, Truong stated that the above cigarettes were hired by Dang Huu Do to be transported from a warehouse in Khe Hoi village, Ha Hoi commune, Thuong Tin, Hanoi.

According to the suspects' statements, at around 6:30 p.m. on May 21, Do asked Truong to go to the warehouse in Khe Hoi village to get 22 cardboard boxes containing 1,100 tobacco plants, equivalent to 11,000 packs of smuggled 555 Gold brand cigarettes, and then transport them to National Highway 1.

Truong hired Nguyen Huu Tin to drive a car with license plate 29A 72873 with Truong to transport goods under the direction of Do. On the way to the beginning of road 427 in Ha Hoi commune, he was discovered and checked.

Expanding the case, based on collected evidence and initial statements of the subjects, the Investigation Police Agency (Department PC46) issued an emergency search warrant for Do's residence and goods hiding address at No. 179 Ga Street, Ha Hoi Commune, Thuong Tin, Hanoi and seized 138 boxes, including 6,900 tobacco plants, equivalent to 69,000 packs of 555 Gold brand cigarettes manufactured abroad without legal invoices and documents.

Thus, the authorities have seized a total of 160 boxes, equivalent to 80,000 packs of cigarettes, worth an estimated VND2.3 billion. This is the case of illegal cigarette seizure with the largest amount of seized evidence since 2012 in Hanoi.

The case is being further investigated and clarified by the police.
