A new report on MH370 suggests the plane descended rapidly after running out of fuel without any pilot intervention.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014, with 239 passengers and crew on board. The incident remains one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries.

According to a report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) released on November 2, analysis of flaperon debris found in Tanzania in June 2016 showed that the plane was not in a landing position.

The report also said satellite communications from the plane were consistent with the idea that MH370 was “at altitude and descending at a high rate of speed” when it disappeared. According to ATSB simulations, the plane turned in a final turn and plunged into the sea at a speed of up to 457 km/h.

ATSB search director Peter Foley told media analysis of a flaperon had “strengthened our confidence” about what happened.

“It was not extended, which means the plane was not in a landing position,” The Star quoted Mr. Foley as saying, referring to the flap extension that allows an aircraft to move safely at low speed in preparation for landing.

Authorities also believe there was no pilot in the cockpit or the pilot was unconscious during the crash. They believe the plane was on autopilot and spinning when it ran out of fuel.
