New surprising discovery inside Jesus' tomb
Scientists have found a layer of dust beneath the marble slab covering Jesus' tomb in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem that previous exploration equipment had not detected.
A team of restoration experts led by the National Technical University of Athens was assigned to carry out a project to reinforce the Edicule, a small shrine built over the tomb of Jesus in the center of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, according to National Geographic.

During the process of opening the tomb, researchers found a layer of dust under the marble slab covering the tomb. This was an unexpected discovery for the team of experts because previous exploration equipment such as ground-penetrating radar did not detect the existence of this layer of dust.
"I was absolutely amazed. My knees were shaking a little bit because I didn't expect to see this," Fredrik Hiebert, an archaeologist with the National Geographic Society and a member of the team, said of the discovery.
Scientists will study the dust to learn more about Jesus’ tomb. The restoration project is expected to be completed in spring 2017.
