The village, estimated to be 14,000 years old, was found on a promontory on Triquet Island, about 500 km northwest of Victoria. The research team said the village is older than the pyramids in Egypt, Independent reported yesterday.

Excavated artifacts include tools such as fire starters, fish hooks and spears from the Ice Age, helping to paint a picture of the formation of civilization in North America, according to CTV Vancouver Island News.

Alisha Gauvreau, a graduate student in anthropology at the University of Victoria and a researcher at the Hakai Institute, was part of the excavation team. "I remember when we got the dating done, we just sat there and thought, 'Oh my gosh, this is ancient.' This discovery changes our idea of how the first people arrived in North America," Gauvreau said.

Experts believe a large influx of immigrants arrived in coastal British Columbia. But the discovery also fits with oral histories of the Heiltsuk Nation, a sculpted nation in British Columbia.
