ScoliosisIt is one of the birth defects affecting 2-3% of the population. Besides congenital causes, diseases, early labor, incorrect posture while studying, etc., the majority of cases have no known cause.
Many children suffer from scoliosis but are not diagnosed early and treated promptly, leading to worsening of the condition. In fact, for children under 4 years old, exercises can help correct the condition, but older children with severe scoliosis may require surgery and post-operative rehabilitation.
SpineThe spine is the most important supporting component of the body, made up of 24 bones arranged in a layered order to form a complete structure. When it is curved, the spine is no longer straight but bends backward or forward, or curves in two sections like an S shape.
The Spinal Surgery Department of Viet Duc Friendship Hospital has received many cases of severe scoliosis, partly due to late detection and lack of timely correction, and partly due to improper treatment, including the use of traditional medicine, which has worsened the condition. In some cases, surgery was indicated but only partially corrected because the spinal curvature was too great.
Scoliosis in children can affect their physical development, leading to stunted growth in height. In the long term, it can affect the chest and pelvis, and compress the heart, lungs, and liver.
Scoliosis in children needs to be detected early because time is a crucial factor that greatly affects treatment outcomes. When the curvature angle is small, children can use orthopedic braces for close monitoring, but when the curvature angle is 50 degrees or more and braces are ineffective, the doctor will consider surgical correction for effective scoliosis treatment.
