New Zealand scientists said on May 11 that they had just recorded a "monster" wave believed to be the largest ever in the Southern Hemisphere, with a height of up to 23.8m, equivalent to an 8-storey building.

According to these scientists, they placed a weather measuring device at sea with a buoy attached and on May 8 the device recorded this giant wave during a strong storm in the Southern Ocean near Campbell Island, about 700km south of New Zealand.

According to ocean expert Tom Durrant, the wave broke the record for the highest wave in the Southern Hemisphere in 2012, which was 22.03m. This is the highest and most violent wave ever recorded in this area.

Mr. Durrant added that in addition to this wave, the storm could have caused other waves higher than 25m, but the weather equipment at sea did not record these waves because it was not installed in the most suitable position.

Also related to the above research, the American magazine Smithsonian recently said that the largest wave ever to occur in the world was a tsunami caused by an earthquake in Lituya Bay in the state of Alaska in 1958 with a height of 30.5m.
