Santi Diving, a Polish sea exploration group, accidentally discovered the British submarine HMS Narwhal, which was sunk during World War II, while searching for the remains of the missing Polish submarine ORP Orzel (Eagle), the Sun reported today.
HMS Narwhal was one of the Royal Navy's most powerful submarines of the 1930s. It was armed with 12 torpedoes and a 10 mm gun. The submarine's captain was Lieutenant Commander Ronald Burch.
The submarine HMS Narwhal was discovered using 3D radar scanning technology. It appears to be intact at a depth of 94 m, about 225 km off the east coast of Scotland. HMS Narwhal left its base in Blyth, Northumberland, England, to carry out a minelaying mission outside German-occupied Norway. But German Dornier bombers attacked it, causing it to sink on July 23, 1940.
"While we were searching for the ORP Orzel, we discovered an unknown submarine at a depth of 94 meters. Initially we hoped the wreckage could be the ORP Orzel, but we quickly realized it was about 13 times longer. It is most likely HMS Narwhal," Stachura said.
Researchers discovered the bodies of 58 sailors inside the HMS Narwhal submarine wreck. They are trying to contact the victims' families. "We are interested in any meeting with the relatives of the HMS Narwhal submarine crew, because we can hear their stories," said Tomasz Stachura, a member of the expedition.
