Ancient city discovered in the middle of the Pacific Ocean

Scientists have just discovered an ancient, forgotten city in the middle of the Pacific Ocean that could be the mysterious city of Atlantis.

The remote and desolate island of Pohnpei, located off the coast of the small nation of Micronesia, has remained largely unexplored by archaeologists and explorers. But satellite imagery has recently revealed a forgotten mystery of the island.

Satellite images show the newly discovered ancient city.

Footage posted to the science channel “What on Earth?” on YouTube revealed images of the mysterious site. The images show an archaeological site known as Nan Madol located on the island of Pohnpei.

The structure is believed to be a city with numerous canals and large stone walls. Researchers believe the city may date back to the 1st or 2nd century AD, and may have been one of the first major cities in the history of the Pacific archipelago.

What makes this new discovery all the more interesting is the remoteness of Pohnpei. The tiny island is located about 4,000km from Los Angeles and about 2,500km from Australia.

Although there is little record of who once lived on the island, Mark McCoy of Southern Methodist University in Texas believes that Nan Modol was likely an ancient capital.
