5 more tons of maggot-infested, foul-smelling bamboo shoots discovered in Nghe An

(Baonghean.vn) - Upon inspection, the authorities discovered that at Mr. Loi's house there were more than 5 tons of bamboo shoots that smelled bad, and some of the bamboo shoot containers had maggots crawling among the fresh bamboo shoots.

On the afternoon of April 12, the Environmental Police Team (Vinh City Police) coordinated with the People's Committee of Le Mao Ward to inspect the fresh bamboo shoot processing and trading facility of Mr. Duong Van Loi's household (Tan Thanh 2 Block, Le Mao Ward, Vinh City).

At the time of the inspection, the authorities discovered 91 plastic drums, 2 tanks containing bamboo shoots soaked in water and 30 sacks containing fresh bamboo shoots with a total weight of about 5 tons of bamboo shoots that were emitting a foul smell. In particular, in some of the barrels, maggots were crawling among the fresh bamboo shoots.

Previously, on April 5, the Environmental Police Department (Provincial Police) discovered and recorded two establishments in Block 2, Doi Cung Ward, that produced fresh bamboo shoots using bleaching chemicals and dyeing them yellow to sell to the market.

Authorities suspect that the yellow powder used by these facilities is amber, which is on the list of banned substances used in food processing because it can cause cancer.
