Scientists from the Institute of Geology of the National Autonomous University (UNAM) and the Mexican Institute of Anthropology and History have announced the discovery of another small pyramid within the Kukulkán pyramid (also known as El Castillo) in the ancient city of Chichén Itzá, Yucatan state.

This small pyramid was discovered when experts used a non-invasive technique – three-dimensional electrical tomography – to observe the interior of the Kukulkán pyramid and determine the condition of the structure.

According to research and observations, the smaller pyramid inside is 10 meters high and includes a corridor and staircase that most likely lead to a temple.

Previously, in 2015, archaeologists also discovered a pit with a diameter of about 25-35m and a depth of 20m beneath Kukulkán – a Mayan temple. This pit is estimated to be about 1,000 years old.

According to experts, this area was very important to the Maya because an underground river ran beneath the sinkhole.

Dr. Andrés Tejero-Andrade of UNAM stated that the Kukulkán pyramid was built to symbolize the underworld, creation, and water: “The pit inside El Castilo is a place of communication with the god Kukulkán, a serpent-like deity who can move underwater.”

According to Mayan legend, Kukulkán was a serpent god, born and raised in an underground cave, taking the form of a giant, feathered serpent. When Kukulkán appeared, he would cause earthquakes.
