(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of March 19, Mr. Tran Minh Quan - Acting Head of the Veterinary Station of Quynh Luu district said that the district had just discovered another outbreak of African swine fever at a livestock farm in Quynh Hung commune.

The outbreak occurred at the farm of Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh in Hamlet 11, Quynh Hung Commune. According to Mr. Vinh, his family has a total herd of 5 pigs, including 1 sow weighing 150 kg and 4 pigs weighing an average of 50 - 60 pigs/kg.

On the evening of March 17, the family saw that the sow was still eating normally and was healthy, but on the morning of March 18, it suddenly died. Just a few minutes later, a pig also showed signs of illness. Upon discovering the incident, the family quickly reported it to the neighborhood and local authorities.

Upon receiving the news, the District Veterinary Station and the Commune Veterinary Board were present at the scene to collect samples for testing, and at the same time coordinated with the local authorities to destroy the entire herd of pigs owned by Mr. Nguyen Thanh Vinh's family.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thien - a veterinary officer of Quynh Hung commune said that after discovering that Mr. Vinh's pigs had died of illness, the commune's veterinary board, together with the district veterinary authority, took samples for testing. At noon on March 19, the commune received a notice that the dead pigs were tested positive for African swine fever.

The entire Quynh Hung commune has more than 300 pigs, of which hamlet 11 (where the epidemic occurred) has 56 pigs; mainly small-scale farming households, only 1 large-scale farming household with a total herd of 60 pigs. After detecting the outbreak in the area, Quynh Hung commune directed specialized forces to set up 3 quarantine checkpoints on 3 roads bordering Quynh Ba, Quynh Ngoc and Quynh Hong communes; at the same time, police forces were assigned to be on duty 24/7 at the checkpoints to control vehicles and spray disinfectants every time a vehicle passed through the area.

Previously, from March 11 to 14, Quynh Hung commune had sprayed 17 liters of disinfectant chemicals at large livestock farms and village roads. However, when African swine fever was detected in hamlet 11, the commune's Veterinary Department purchased an additional 10 liters of chemicals to spray at 3 checkpoints, epidemic areas and places where the animals were destroyed. In addition, the commune proactively purchased 2 tons of lime powder to spread evenly at large livestock farms, threatening roads and quarantine checkpoints.

Mr. Tran Minh Quan - acting head of the Quynh Luu District Veterinary Station said that to urgently respond to the African swine fever outbreak in Quynh Hung commune, the unit will provide an additional 40 liters of chemicals for the locality to spray disinfectant.

Threatened areas will direct the Veterinary Board of communes to proactively spray chemicals and lime powder thickly and tightly on roads adjacent to the epidemic area./.
