Promoting the role of the Youth Union and Young Pioneers in preventing and combating drowning accidents
(Baonghean.vn) - In charge of caring for and educating children, the Youth Union and Young Pioneer organizations in Nghe An province have actively implemented many practical activities to help reduce the risk of drowning in children during the hot season.
Many creative solutions
In recent days, hundreds of children in Quynh Luong commune (Quynh Luu district) have participated in a program to equip them with water safety skills and first aid and rescue skills in emergency situations. This is a meaningful activity organized by the Youth Union in collaboration with the Quynh Luong Commune Health Station as the peak summer months are approaching.

In recent times, the youth of Quynh Luong commune have actively coordinated with schools to put up warning signs in deep abysses where drowning may occur, organize free swimming classes for students, and strengthen communication through the loudspeaker system of each hamlet.
Along with Quynh Luong, communes in Quynh Luu district have also been actively organizing many important activities to minimize drowning accidents when the weather starts to get hot. In particular, the Youth Union of schools has directed the Youth Union in the flag-salute meeting and broadcast on the Young Pioneers radio, reminding students how to prevent drowning.
School Boards of Directors direct professional groups to include drowning prevention content in the teaching plan during flag salute sessions in the experiential activities section; regularly post articles on drowning prevention on Zalo and Facebook pages and teachers share them with each parent to take measures to remind students.
Quynh Luu has a coastline of nearly 20km along with 82 lakes and dams, 2 large rivers, 4 main canal systems flowing through many communes and many canals, ditches, and ponds. To ensure safety and avoid drowning accidents among children and adolescents, the Youth Union and Young Pioneers have proactively checked ponds, lakes, canals, and dams at risk to mobilize people to build walls, fences, and warning signs of danger in deep water. At the same time, parents are advised to regularly pay attention, remind, and manage their children well during the beginning of the hot season.

Up the mountain to Tan Ky district - a locality with Con river flowing through 12 communes with a total length of 60km and 6 large streams such as Khe Thiem, Khe Tham, Khe La, Khe Loa, Khe Sanh, Khe Cua. The number of lakes and dams is large, posing a risk of drowning, especially for children.
As soon as the hot season began, Tan Ky District Youth Union directed the Youth Union bases to establish 22 youth shock teams with nearly 800 members and young people as the core in organizing propaganda about knowledge of drowning prevention.
The District Youth Union has deployed models such as B40 steel fences, bamboo fences to prevent drowning, supporting life jackets and life buoys for remote and disadvantaged areas; installing and repairing more than 370 warning signs for areas at risk of drowning throughout the district.

In addition to traditional methods, recently, many Youth Union organizations have installed solar-powered drowning prevention propaganda systems.
Over the past year, along the Lam River, in areas with potentially dangerous deep water and spontaneous swimming beaches of the people, the Youth Union of Vinh City and Hung Nguyen District has installed nearly 10 automatic drowning warning systems with a total value of each system from 5 to 7 million VND.
The project includes a loudspeaker integrated with USB and Bluetooth, a timer chip system, and a battery that uses solar energy to charge. Thanks to automatic programming, at the specified time, the machine will automatically broadcast the propaganda content recorded on the memory card. Every day, when people start swimming in rivers and lakes, the system will automatically broadcast messages on drowning prevention without the need for a human operator.

Create a safe playground for children
At the end of March, the Youth Union of Dien Thinh Commune (Dien Chau District) coordinated with the Youth Union of Dien Thinh Kindergarten to deploy a green library model and a children's playground with a scientific and convenient design for the school's children. The total value of the project is up to more than 35 million, accumulated through the activities calling for social resources of the Youth Union and the kindergarten in coordination in the past time.
It is known that in 12 hamlets of Dien Thinh commune, the Youth Union has effectively coordinated with the Hamlet Front Working Committee to mobilize contributions from people to complete 12 playgrounds for children and 2 green library projects.

Ms. Dang Thi Nghia - Secretary of the Youth Union of Dien Thinh commune said that the 14 above-mentioned projects have contributed to creating healthy playgrounds in the summer for children in the commune, thereby contributing to reducing accidents and injuries in children, especially drowning.
The creation of safe playgrounds for children during the summer has been implemented synchronously by the youth of the whole province. During Youth Month 2024, out of more than 1,080 community-oriented youth projects, hundreds of children's playgrounds were donated in localities.
Along with that, the commune-level Youth Unions have donated many spaces for reading, interacting and participating in Team activities to the disadvantaged teams in mountainous districts with a value of nearly 100 million VND. On average, each year, the whole province has supported the construction of more than 200 new playgrounds for children with a value of over 3 billion VND. These efforts are an important premise to improve the effectiveness of drowning prevention in the whole province.

Nghe An is a large province with 13 large and small rivers with a total length of over 1,000 km, along with an 82 km long coastline. The whole province currently has nearly 430,000 team members, teenagers, and children, operating in 905 Unions across the province. In addition, there is a large force of young people and teenagers, but the rate of swimming according to the survey is still very low. Therefore, in recent years, the Youth Union at all levels has organized and implemented many programs and activities to protect children from accidents and injuries, especially drowning.

Recently, the Provincial Youth Union Standing Committee and the Provincial Youth Union Council of Nghe An have directed Youth Union and Youth Union organizations at all levels to strengthen propaganda work to change awareness about drowning prevention, targeting not only students but also their parents. At the same time, mobilize all resources to effectively implement models to prevent and combat drowning accidents and injuries for children in a synchronous manner throughout the province.
