Philippines: A governor was assassinated, two bodyguards were injured

The attack occurred as the governor and local officials were attending a flag-raising ceremony.



Governor Sol Matugas luckily escaped death

Philippine authorities said on August 12 that the governor of Surigao del Norte province on the southern island of Mindanao was lucky to survive and was not injured in an assassination attempt that occurred in the Caraga region.

According to a local police spokesman, the attack occurred at around 7:45 a.m. on August 12 (local time) when Governor Sol Matugas and local officials were attending a flag-raising ceremony near the Surigao Provincial Court, injuring two bodyguards and a security officer. The perpetrator, identified as Samuel Lapac, 69, tried to approach and point a gun at Governor Matugas but was stopped by security officers.

The spokesman said an investigation is underway to determine the motive for the assassination of Governor Matugas. It is known that the perpetrator was formerly the head of the village government of Luna, also in Surigao City./.
