Governor Sol Matugas narrowly escaped death.

Philippine authorities said on August 12 that the governor of Surigao del Norte province, located on the southern island of Mindanao, miraculously survived and was unharmed in an assassination attempt in the Caraga region.

According to a local police spokesperson, the attack occurred around 7:45 a.m. local time on August 12 while Governor Sol Matugas and local officials were attending a flag-raising ceremony near the Surigao Provincial Court headquarters, injuring two bodyguards and a security officer. The perpetrator, identified as 69-year-old Samuel Lapac, attempted to approach and point a gun at Governor Matugas but was stopped by security personnel.

The spokesperson said an investigation is underway to determine the motive for the assassination of Governor Matugas. The perpetrator is believed to have previously served as the head of the Luna village administration, also in Surigao City.
