About 8,000 troops will take part in the 12-day exercise, called Balikatan (Shoulder to Shoulder), which will also include Australian troops and observers from seven other countries.
"This year, Balikatan activities will focus on addressing traditional and non-traditional security concerns," said Lieutenant General Gilbert Gapay, commander of the Philippine exercise, emphasizing that activities will include planning and simulation training, operational training and civil activities.
Meanwhile, Brigadier General Chris McPhillips, commander of the US exercise, said the exercise will involve F-35B stealth aircraft, F-18 fighter jets, V-22 vertical take-off aircraft, and many other types of aircraft.
Similar to last year, the exercise will take place mainly in the northern region of the Philippines, in many areas of the provinces of Pampanga, Tarlac and Zambales.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the exercise, Lieutenant General Gilbert Gapay said: "(The exercise) is not directed at any existing security threats or concerns. This is a broad exercise to enhance interoperability between Philippine and US forces."
For his part, Brigadier General Chris McPhillips replied "no" when asked if any adjustments would be made to this year's exercise regarding the South China Sea area.
“Although we change Balikatan slightly each year to introduce new capabilities and training, Balikatan is not aimed at any other country in the region,” Brigadier General McPhilippines stressed.
Earlier in March, US Secretary of State Pompeo expressed concern that Beijing's activities in the region would threaten the Philippines' sovereignty, security and livelihood.
