Nguyen Phuong Mai's animated film "My Home" has a chance to be nominated for the final Oscar 2016.

The American Academy has just announced the shortlist of 10 animated short films for the 2016 Oscar nominations. This list includes the film My Home (Chez Moi) by director Nguyen Phuong Mai.

12 minutes long, My Home tells the story of a boy named Hugo who notices strange things happening in his house after his mother returns from a trip.

Before reaching the top 10 of the Oscars, My Home won nearly 10 awards at various short film festivals. The work is also currently on the shortlist for the French César Award for "Best Animated Short Film".

"My Home" tells the story of a boy's strange experience with the changes around him.

A press release from the Leeds International Film Festival (UK) in October stated: "This somewhat sad film tells the story of a boy struggling to get used to new people and new things in the house. The film uses excellent color gamut and interweaves images. The director promises to be a potential filmmaker."

Nguyen Phuong Mai was born in 1988 in Ho Chi Minh City. At the age of 15, she moved to Paris and studied applied arts at Estienne High School. She then studied directing and screenwriting at La Poudrière Film School. Phuong Mai has made short films such as Hors d'usage, Mourir d'aimer, Un vrai petit génie and Point de fuite. Phuong Mai currently lives in Paris and makes television series, short films and designs.

The shortlist of 10 films was selected by members of the American Academy from 60 short animated films representing different countries. My Home is a French film. From this shortlist of 10 films, Academy members will then select five Oscar nominees. The nominations were announced on January 14, 2016.

Phuong Mai is one of only two female directors whose films made the top 10 this year. The other is Melissa Johnson, who directed Love in the Time of March Madness. In addition, four of the 10 directors whose films made the list have been nominated for Oscars in the past.
