New 'Spider-Man' movie earns $257 million worldwide after three days
The most talked-about movie topic in the world last week was “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” The film’s box office performance in North America and international markets is proof of that.
Trailer for the movie 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'
"Spider-Man: Homecoming" is a solo superhero film about Spider-Man (Tom Holland) and is co-produced by Marvel Studios and Sony.
Available at 4,378 North American theaters since July 7, Spider-Man: Homecoming unexpectedly earned an estimated $117 million after just three weekends. This is a great victory for Sony Pictures and its production partner Marvel Studios (Disney).
Previously, they were quite reserved when they only dared to predict the number of 80 million USD, while critics expected the new movie about superhero Spider-Man to open at 90-110 million USD.
Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have teamed up to make Spider-Man: Homecoming a superhero movie for families and young adults. Tom Holland plays 15-year-old Peter Parker, who wants to prove himself worthy of being a member of The Avengers.

Blockbuster Spider-Man: Homecoming had a great debut at the box office. |
Sony spent an estimated $175 million for Marvel Studios to produce the project, while also taking full distribution rights and receiving all the revenue. In return, Marvel Studios was allowed to use the image of the Spider-Man character in subsequent works in the MCU.
According to Deadline, Sony also partnered with more than 30 brands to promote Homecoming, and the total cost for this series of activities was around $140 million. The efforts that the producers put in clearly paid off, as the $117 million domestic opening was the second highest in Sony Pictures' release history (only behind Spider-Man 3's $151.1 million in 2007).
Spider-Man: Homecoming has been met with critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently has a 94% rating - one of the highest in the superhero genre. With an additional $140 million from international markets, the blockbuster's total revenue after three days is $257 million.
Despicable Me 3 dropped to second place, but it still managed to make money, dropping just 53% from its opening weekend. It added $34 million domestically from 4,535 theaters, bringing its domestic cume to $148.2 million.
In international markets, the third installment of Despicable Me even surpassed Spider-Man: Homecoming with an estimated $139 million. The figure includes $66 million from China - a new record for animated films in the country of a billion people. At this time, after 10 days of showing, Despicable Me 3 has reached the milestone of $447.8 million globally.
Edgar Wright's baby, Baby Driver, also continued its impressive run. The action film dropped just 38% from its opening weekend and added $12.75 million from 3,226 theaters. After 10 days, the $34 million Sony Pictures production has earned $56.8 million in North America and another $14 million from international markets.
Meanwhile, Wonder Woman proved to be the most memorable box office hit of 2017. Down just 35.5% from last week, the Warner Bros. superhero film earned an additional $10.14 million.
With $368.8 million domestically and $377 million internationally, Wonder Woman surpassed Suicide Squad ($745.6 million) and Man of Steel ($668 million) to become the second-highest-grossing film in the DCEU globally, behind only Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's $873.3 million.
On the other hand, Transformers: The Last Knight continued to slow down with only $6.3 million from 3,241 theaters (down 62.7% from last week). The target of $150 million in North America and $500 million from international markets now seems too far away for director Michael Bay's Transformers team.
Final trailer for the movie 'War for the Planet of the Apes'
"War for the Planet of the Apes" is the third installment of the rebooted "Planet of the Apes" franchise. The film continues to revolve around the war for the planet between intelligent primates and humans.
This weekend, War for the Planet of the Apes hits North American theaters (3,800 theaters) starting July 14. The final installment of the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise is almost certain to dethrone Spider-Man Homecoming, with industry observers expecting it to surpass the $72.6 million opening weekend of its predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014).
