Three films on this list depict the vibrant lives of famous figures. The Imitation Game, directed by Morten Tyldum, tells the story of the legendary British mathematician Alan Turing, based on Andrew Hodges' biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma. Alan is credited with saving many lives during World War II, when the British army launched a program to decode the Enigma code for secret wartime communications, and he was one of the creators of the machine designed to decode it. The research team was repeatedly sabotaged by German spies and had to overcome numerous obstacles. Despite his talent, Alan Turing suffered a tragedy after the war: in 1952, he was prosecuted for homosexual acts, which were considered a crime under British law at the time. Alan accepted estrogen injections (a form of chemical treatment to eliminate fertility and sexual function) instead of serving time in prison. He passed away in 1954.

Ava Duvernay's film Selma is a glimpse into the life of leader and Reverend Martin Luther King (played by David Oyelowo) and his struggle to secure voting rights for all citizens. This perilous campaign culminated in a large march on March 25, 1965, from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, leading to President Johnson signing the 1965 Voting Rights Act. The film realistically portrays the Reverend's aspiration: "I have a dream. One day, the nation will rise up to live according to the true meaning of our conviction, when we always believe that this truth is complete: all men are created equal." The film has been critically acclaimed for its artistic merit.

Not to be outdone by the two films above, The Theory of Everything, directed by James Marsh, is based on the memoir Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen by Jane Hawking. The film tells the touching love story between Jane and her ex-husband, the brilliant British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones play Stephen and Jane in the film. “This is truly an extraordinary love story, in a unique setting where the two characters must overcome adversity as if life itself had brought them together,” director James Marsh told the press. The film has won numerous awards, including the Hollywood Film Awards and the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
