Railway tracks in Hanoi Old Quarter:There are few places in the world where railway tracks are located in the middle of residential areas like Hanoi’s Old Quarter, with houses on both sides less than a meter from the road. Train goes through 19-story apartment building:Located in eastern China, Chongqing is one of the most populous cities in the country with 49 million people. As a result, planners here are always creative in solving space for infrastructure. |

In 2004, when the second railway project was approved, the government was faced with two options: one was to demolish the entire 19-story apartment building, the other was to create a tunnel for the train to pass through. Therefore, a special railway was built in the middle of the building, from the 6th to the 8th floor, but without affecting the residents thanks to a special soundproofing system. After 13 years, the city government still believes this was the best decision they have ever made. |

Cross-sea railway in Germany:The Hindenburgdamm is an 11 km (7.8 mi) railway line that connects the island of Sylt with Schleswig-Holstein, Germany’s northernmost state. Before the railway, travel from the mainland to Sylt was dependent on weather and tides. It took at least six hours to travel by boat from the mainland to Sylt. In winter, ice in the Wadden Sea blocked ships and boats, making it difficult for tourists to visit Sylt. As the seaside resort of Westerland on Sylt became increasingly popular, construction of the oversea railway began in 1923 and was completed four years later. Today, more than 100 trains run daily, half of which carry passenger cars. |

Mountain Railway in America:When the railroad was completed in 1864 through Auburn, California, it was hailed as the “eighth wonder of the world.” “The Bloomer Cut was not built in the ordinary way. It was built through impassable mountains, deep ravines, rocky gorges, and barren plains, and is a testament to the strength and determination of the thousands of workers who built it,” Indiana state representative William Holman said in 1862. |
