US Vice Admiral Dies Suddenly in Bahrain

Commander Stearney, commander of the US 5th Fleet, died at his home, authorities found no signs of abnormalities.

Vice Admiral Scott Stearney, commander of the 5th Fleet and Naval Forces Central Command, died at his home in Bahrain on December 1, according toAFP.

"This is devastating news for the Stearney family, for the 5th Fleet, and for the entire Navy," said Admiral John Richardson, commander of the US Navy. "We have not seen anything unusual in this case."

Richardson added that the US Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the Bahraini Ministry of Internal Affairs are cooperating in the investigation into the cause of Vice Admiral Stearney's death. Rear Admiral Paul Schlise, deputy commander of the 5th Fleet, was appointed to take command of the fleet after Stearney's death.

Stearney, a native of Chicago, joined the U.S. Navy in 1982 after graduating with a bachelor's degree in economics from the University of Notre Dame. Stearney was an FA-18 Hornet fighter pilot and deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan.
