The Pha Lom hamlet (Tam Hop commune) is currently a hotspot for measles outbreaks in the mountainous district of Tuong Duong. Since the beginning of the year, Pha Lom has recorded 97 cases of measles (out of a total of 130 cases in the entire district). Currently, the health sector of Tuong Duong district is actively coordinating with the military medical corps of the Tam Hop Border Guard Post to prevent and control the measles outbreak.

Measles outbreakThe outbreak in Pha Lom village stemmed from the very low vaccination rate among children (nearly 50%). This was due to the limited education and awareness of the local population regarding health. Difficult living conditions meant grandparents and parents were preoccupied with farming and paid little attention to their children; they were also worried about their children getting fevers after vaccinations, preventing them from working. The health team's outreach efforts faced many difficulties due to language barriers; and the villagers worked from dawn until dusk... (Photo: Thanh Chung)

Following the outbreak of measles in Pha Lom village, on March 12th, the Nghe An Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the Tuong Duong District Health Center formed a task force to direct disease prevention and control efforts; they decided to establish an isolation and treatment area right at the village's cultural center. The isolation and treatment area was established to improve the effectiveness of treatment, provide convenience for patients, and prevent cross-infection at medical facilities. To ensure the isolation and treatment area operates effectively, the Tuong Duong District Health Center assigned two medical staff members (including one Hmong doctor) to coordinate with two staff members from the commune health station and one military doctor from the Tam Hop Border Guard Post to carry out the task. Since then, the quarantine area has treated 20 children with measles; currently, 14 have recovered, 3 children whose condition worsened and were transferred to the Medical Center for treatment, and 3 children are currently being treated (expected to recover in the next 2-3 days). Information from the Tuong Duong District Medical Center: Tam Hop has 101 cases; 91 have recovered; 10 are still under treatment; in addition to the 3 cases being treated at the quarantine area, there are 2 cases being treated at the commune health station and 5 cases being treated at the district medical center.
