More than 130 parents want to register their children for the free breakfast club at school, while the number of places is limited.

At 3am, outside Ysgol Y Berllan Deg Primary School in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, there was a queue of parents. More than 130 parents and grandparents were there with camping chairs, snacks and water bottles, patiently waiting for their turn to register their children for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a Welsh Government programme that provides free breakfast every day for a year to primary school children. Because the number of meals is limited, the programme is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parents lined up at the school gates, bringing camping chairs, snacks and drinks.

For parents who are tired of waking up early every morning to prepare food, take their children to school and then travel long distances to work, the club is really the optimal solution. The program helps them save time to prepare food for their children, take them to school on time and get to the office on time to work.

Annett Farrow, from Carmarthen, left home at 1am and was there by 3am to queue up for her grandchild’s free meal. Her son and daughter-in-law were on holiday so she had to do it on her behalf. Annett brought biscuits and crisps for a snack and used the hotel toilets across the street if she needed to.

Leanne Taylor, another parent, toldIndependentTaylor says signing her children up for breakfast club is the only way she can keep her career afloat. She says she works opposite Tredegar House in Newport, 15 miles from Cardiff. If she drops her children off at 8.30am, she can't get to the office by 10am because of the traffic. "I can't manage without signing them up for the club," she says. The British mother of two added that those who showed up early were those who needed their children’s breakfasts the most. Some parents who missed out last year will be trying to get in early to get in this year.

Taylor says enrolling her kids in the breakfast club is the only way she can keep her job.
