More than 130 parents want to register their children for the free breakfast club at school, while the number of places is limited.

At 3 a.m., outside Ysgol Y Berllan Deg Primary School in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, there was already a line of parents. More than 130 parents and grandparents were there with camping chairs, snacks and water bottles, patiently waiting their turn to register their children for the breakfast club. The breakfast club is a Welsh Government program that provides free breakfast every day for a year to primary school children. Because the number of meals is limited, the program is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Parents lined up in front of the school gates, bringing camping chairs, snacks and drinks.

For parents who are tired of waking up early every morning to prepare food, take their children to school and then travel long distances to work, the club is really the optimal solution. The program helps them save time to prepare food for their children, take them to school on time and get to the office on time to work.

Annett Farrow, who lives in Carmarthen, left her home at 1am and was there at 3am to queue up for her grandchild’s free meal. Her son and daughter-in-law were on holiday so she had to do it for her. Annett brought biscuits and crisps for a snack and used the toilet at the hotel across the street if she needed to.

Leanne Taylor, another parent, toldIndependentTaylor says enrolling her children in breakfast clubs is the only way she can sustain her career. She works opposite Tredegar House in Newport, 24km from Cardiff. If she drops her children off at school at 8:30am, she can't get to the office by 10am because of the traffic. "I can't manage without enrolling my children in clubs," she says. The British mother of two added that those who arrived first were those who needed breakfast the most. Some parents who missed out last year will try to get in early to be able to register this year.

Taylor says enrolling her children in breakfast club is the only way she can keep her job.
