Saudi Arabian women drove their cars en masse on Sunday morning after a law issued by the country's king allowing women to drive came into effect.

In footage broadcast online by Saudi Arabian satellite TV channels operating in the country's largest cities, it can be seen that within the first minutes after the law came into effect, dozens of women were behind the wheel on the streets.

Last September, the king of Saudi Arabia issued a decree allowing women to drive for the first time. Saudi Arabia is the only country in the world where women are banned from driving by law. The Women's Driving Act comes into effect on June 24. Before that date, officials say, all preparations must be completed.

Significant social flexibility in what was once considered the most conservative country began to emerge after 31-year-old Mohammed bin Salman ascended to the throne.
