Spraying herbicides makes the grass grow more?
(Baonghean) -In recent days, peanut growers in many communes in Dien Chau and Nghi Loc districts are having headaches due to the rampant "weed bandits" despite spraying herbicides many times.
Ms. Huong in Hamlet 13, Dien Thinh Commune, Dien Chau District, was working hard to weed peanuts in the field and said: "It's so miserable, I don't know why this year the grass has grown so much. Every year, after sowing peanuts, we just have to weed once and that's it. This year, even though we have weeded twice, the grass still grows like that." Sharing the same situation of the grass growing better than the peanuts, Ms. Hoa said: "This is the fifth time I have sprayed herbicide, but the grass still grows, I don't know why."
Ms. Huong, Hamlet 13, Dien Thinh Commune (Dien Chau) is weeding.
According to many people, there may be something wrong with the herbicide, because compared to previous years, this year people still sow peanuts and follow the same procedures as every year. It is known that most peanut growers here have sprayed the herbicide Dibstar-50ec of Dien Ban - Quang Ngai Agricultural Chemicals Corporation.
We observed that in the peanut fields, grass grew a lot, some families mobilized the whole family to go to the fields to weed the peanuts but still could not keep up. In hamlets 13, 8 or 12 of Dien Thinh commune these days, the atmosphere was like a festival to weed the fields.
Mr. Hoang Tien Sy - Chairman of Bac Thinh Agricultural Cooperative (Dien Thinh, Dien Chau) said: 2,400 bottles of Dibstar-50EC herbicide along with nylon to be distributed to people according to the support policy of the Provincial People's Committee have been transferred from the district Plant Protection Station. However, we do not understand why after spraying herbicide, the grass grows so much, we have reported to the district and are waiting for the results."
Not only in Dien Chau but also in Nghi Long, Nghi Trung, Nghi Thach, Nghi Hoa communes of Nghi Loc district, peanut weeds are also rampant in the fields. Mr. Nguyen Phuong Dong, head of hamlet 12, Nghi Long commune, said: "We don't know why so much grass has grown this year. My family has mobilized the whole family to go to the fields to pull out peanut weeds but it's still not finished."
Next to that, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phuc was also spraying weed killer and said: "Most people here spray weed killer, Dibstar-500c, now I'm using another type to see how it goes because there are too many weeds and I can't handle it all."
Worried that this year's peanut crop will be greatly affected in terms of productivity and quality, farmers are having a headache because of the weed attack and do not know what to do. Should the local government as well as the relevant agencies intervene to find out the cause of the incident and soon have a satisfactory answer for farmers?
